Justice, Development and Peace Commission(JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan is a faith-based not-for-profitand non-governmental organization established in the year 1991 to cater for allpeople that are within Oyo and Osun States, South-West Nigeria, irrespective ofreligion, culture, race or gender. The commission’s area of operation covers 20local government areas. 14 of these are located in Oyo State while theremaining 6 local government areas are in Osun State. The Commission is dulyregistered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, Nigeria with registrationnumber: 16878.
Our vision is to promote a community where justice and promotion of human dignity are held sacred; such that all are fully alive and active through the realisation of their full potentials in a just, safe and free environment. The commission is engaged in community Development, Prison Welfare and Reconciliation, Human Rights Protection, Legal Aid services, Democracy and Good Governance monitoring, Lobby and Advocacy for Policy reform and implementation, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Peace Building, Emergency Relief and Humanitarian support, Gender Equity and Women Development, HIV / AIDS Care and Counselling, Protection of Child’s Rights, Capacity Building and Economic empowerment of the less privileged, the underserved, and the marginalized. These are done through various projects under five unique programmes namely: Democracy and Human Rights Programme, Integrated Development Programme, Women Development Child Rights Programme, Community Service Punishment Programme, Caritas desk Ibadan and Justice, Development and Peace Committee in Parish.
These programmes are run by a team of 41 members of Staff who are seasoned professionals in their various disciplines working assiduously towards the actualization of set objectives. 650 farmers‘ yields have increased by an average of 20% between 2014-2020, animal mortality has reduced by 60% since 2010; over 500 farmers have recorded significant improvement in their lives courtesy of our capacity building programmes, technical and social services. Over 40,000 women have been counselled on the dangers and ills of Female Genital Mutilation since 2017 in 21 Counselling centers establishedin Oyo and Osun States. 50 women have received economic empowerment within the last 6 months Sept 2020-March 2021; 399 girls have benefitted in the educational and vocational resettlement packages that include, schoolfees/ school levies, textbooks, notebooks and vocational equipment to alleviatethe plight of indigent adolescent girls in Ibadan through the Awareness Creation and Campaign against Child Trafficking and Labour project since 2016. In 2018, child rights clubs we reestablished in 54 public secondary schools in Ibadan to educate children ontheir rights.
We have been able to liaise with 8106 active civic group members to push the government of Oyo State to implement a numberof development projects in the fields of potable water supply, rehabilitation and construction of classrooms, rehabilitation of health centres, and supply of electricity, that has benefiting over a million inhabitants in the grassroots of Ibadan; weekly visits are made to the Agodi prison, to assist inmates with their general welfare and with legal aid services; JDPC, Ibadan is a member of the State Committee for Speedy Administration of Justice; In 2013 she obtained a Parliamentary Liaison status in the Oyo State House of Assembly and with this pushed for the Bill on Community Services as analternative punishment for minor offences. This bill was passed into law in2017 and has since then contributed to the reduction in the number of custodial sentencing in Oyo State. JDPC, Ibadan successfully introduced paralegals into Oyo State to administer alternative dispute resolution and provide first aid legal council to indigent members of their communities; these para legals resolved 303 cases by the year 2020. Over 2000 households were given emergency relief food packs at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Ourorganization has facilitated the inclusion of recommendations submitted by civil society groups from various local governments into the 2021-2024 budget of Oyo State. We have trained over 120 community paralegals to offer first aid counselling and administer alternative dispute resolution in their various localities.
At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic we distributed palliatives to over 1300 vulnerable households and responded to the needs of victims of Fulani herdsmen attack in Ibarapa land, Southwest Nigeria. JDPC, Ibadan successfully introduced 75 paralegals into Oyo State in 2020 to administer alternative dispute resolution and provide first aid legal council to indigent members of their communities; these paralegals have resolved 501 cases by the end of year 2024. All of these have been possible with the support of esteemed partners like MISEREOR, British High Commission, Missio, Conrad Hilton Sisters, Irish Aid, Embassy of Japan, European Union, Manos Unidas, AWDF Ghana, Catholic Relief Services, Oxfam, Kinder missionswerk, Skretting Nigeria, Misean Cara, Food and Agricultural Organization and International Budget Partnership, Inc.
Pro bono services provided by JDPC lawyers and volunteers play a critical role in ensuring that underserved and marginalized individuals in Ibadan have access to legal representation.
The Justice Development and Peace Commission has made a significant impact on the lives of freed inmates through its legal aid services. An estimation of about 580 inmates has gained their freedom
JDPC Ibadan has assisted farmers consisting of both fish farms and cash crop farmers to grow their farm produce which cut across 20 LGAs in Oyo, Osun and Ogun States.
In our bid to render humanitarian services and promote social justice, its impact on women empowerment and child support is noticable through our programs and advocacy.
We have made significant impact to the rescue and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking, with a multifaceted approach that emphasizes both immediate intervention and long-term recovery.
This is one that postulates that minor, petty or non – serious offenders should not be imprisoned except in deserving cases as imprisonment may turn them into potentially dangerous citizens
